It can also be viewed as 2.5/1 odds.

. It’s a SUPER play when betting short (small) underdogs.

The reason that the favorite pays less with more risk is because the outcome is more likely to happen.

Conversely, the underdog becomes a bet x amount to profit more proposition.

As you can see, if you take a basketball game with a favorite of -7 and change it to a moneyline bet, you are not risking $330 to win $100. There’s a good chance that if the underdog is going to cover the +3 that they’ll also win the game straight up. Underdogs are less likely to happen, hence why their compensated at such a high rate.

Here’s an odds conversion chart so you can get a look at what a point spread converts to when changed to a moneyline bet:

For those of you who aren’t familiar with what a moneyline bet is, let us explain:

Losing one -450 play means you have to win 4.5 bets in a row just to break even and that is not easy in sports betting! In fact, it’s against the odds.

Point SpreadMoney Line-2-130/+110-2.5-140/+120-3-155/+135-3.5-175/+155-4-200/+170-4.5-220/+180-5/-5.5-240/+190-6-270/+210-6.5-300/+220-7-330/+250-7.5/-8/-8.5-360/+280-9/-9.5-400/+300-10-450/+325

On the flip side, if you want to take a hoops underdog that would have been getting +7 points on the spread, this bet now pays +250 which means you bet $100 to PROFIT $250 (or profit $2.50 for ever $1.00 you risk). While its very likely to cash, IF IT DOESN’T, you are screwed and in a hole BIGTIME.

So with a dog of +3, you would play the moneyline at +135 which would mean your bet would be risking $100 to profit $135 instead of taking it on the spread at +3 which would be risking $110 (more) to win $100 (less.)

A moneyline is just a fancy way for saying that we’re eliminating the point spread and making it so your team only has to win by one point.

A great place to install a moneyline bet is when an NBA team is a short underdog, say +3 or less. This isn’t always the case, but is often the case.

Good luck in your action!

Since that gives too much value to the favored team in the bet and is not fair to the underdog, we compensate for each by creating an odds to win style bet.

The moneyline is a great bet in basketball betting, as long as you don’t get too carried away betting favorites. (You could also look at it as risking $3.30 for every $1.00 you want to win.)

Before we go, may we recommend you check out the best places to bet on basketball on the web?

The favorite bet then becomes a bet more to win less proposition.

As some advice from somebody who has been there, don’t even for a second think that taking a -10 favorite and turning it into a -450 moneyline play is a solid bet Get More Info

Online gambling companies struggle to clear EU hurdles | Reuters

Online gambling is growing at an annual rate of almost 15 percent in the EU and will be worth an estimated 13 billion euros ($17 billion) by 2015, according to EU figures.

Analyst Nick Batram at brokerage Peel Hunt said smaller players would likely be picked off because of the impact of higher tax and regulatory burdens across Europe.

William Hill, Britain’s largest bookmaker, has joined Betfair in pulling out of Greece and has also stopped offering sports betting to German residents because of a 5 percent turnover tax.

In that vein, William Hill has provisionally agreed a 485 million pound takeover of smaller rival Sportingbet, keen to get its hands on the company’s regulated Australian betting business.

However, the industry questions whether the EU will go into battle over gambling when it is facing so many other problems.

(Additional reporting by Rosalba O’Brien; Editing by David Holmes)

Betting exchange operator Betfair for instance said this week it was halting marketing and investment in unregulated markets, including EU members Cyprus, Germany and Greece.

By joining forces with Belcasinos, a unit of local casino owner Group Partouche, bwin.party neatly met a requirement to have a presence in Belgium to win a license for online poker, casino and sports betting.

The agreement is a rare bright spot in a tough regulatory environment for online gambling companies across the continent.

The European Commission, the EU’s executive, stepped in to the debate in October when it published a medium-term plan to clarify regulations and promote cooperation between member states, ruling out EU-wide legislation for the time being.

The 27 EU member states retain the right to regulate their gambling sectors as they see fit, but rules must comply with EU law, broadly meaning they must be consistent and proportionate.

Gambling companies themselves have taken advantage of different tax regimes where they work in their favor.

In recent years, most betting companies have moved their British online betting operations to Britain’s overseas territory of Gibraltar. There they are sheltered from a 15 percent tax on gross profit faced by operators based in Britain.

This is illustrated in Britain, historically the biggest betting market in Europe and a place with a well-developed gambling culture where bookmakers have operated in town centers for 50 years.

New legislation will close off that loophole after 2014. There is more change afoot but it should ultimately play into the hands of the better-capitalized companies.”

LONDON A partnership stuck on Friday between bwin.party Digital Entertainment and a Belgian casino group has defused one of many disputes pitting online gambling companies against governments across Europe.

Some companies are scaling back activities in European markets where, they say, regulatory risks are too high or tax rates are punitive.

“I think there is a lot more M&A activity to come,” said Batram.

BRITISH TAXES

“They will chip away at some of the most blatant ones,” said Clive Hawkswood, chief executive of trade body the Remote Gambling Association. STAKES RISE

The online operators accuse the European Commission of failing to follow through properly on complaints lodged about regulation in no fewer than 20 or the 27 EU member states.

“It is not a European Union in any way, it is a patchwork of different countries who happen to be in the EU,” said Professor Leighton Vaughan Williams, director of the betting research unit at Nottingham Business School in central England.

Barnier has written to member states accused of breaching EU law in the way they handle gambling, seeking an update on the situation by the end of the year.

The stakes are high. The shift to a taxation model based on the location of the consumer was expected to cost gambling companies as much as 270 million pounds ($435 million) by 2016-17.

“It is getting more complicated and more expensive. “What we really need is for them to take some to the European Court and take enforcement action.”

“Different countries have different vested interests and different ideas they are trying to promote. Are they trying to protect consumers or to maximize their tax take?” he said.

Betting online on sports events or playing poker on the Internet are increasingly popular pastimes in Europe, where operators say they are held back by unfair and discriminatory rules in many European Union countries.

The agreement came a month after bwin.party’s co-CEO was questioned by Belgian authorities in an escalating license dispute the company said was costing it 700,000 euros ($916,000) in monthly revenue.

“All citizens must be adequately protected, money laundering and fraud must be prevented, sport must be safeguarded against betting-related match-fixing and national rules must comply with EU law,” Internal Market and Services Commissioner Michel Barnier said, setting out his approach. Don’t Bet on It: Sports Gambling in America

Adam Silver is right. The sports establishment is vigilant in protecting the integrity of the product, and it will remain so if gambling is legalized, regulated and taxed.

We have entered a new phase of American history where some folks have begun to realize that prohibiting certain vices is foolish or just ineffective.

Adam Silver’s approach calls for federal legislation that would allow states to decide whether they would authorize sports gambling. It is ubiquitous. The availability of gambling online makes that easy to accomplish. They should come prepared with an answer.

This Blogger’s Books and Other Items from…

Gambling on sporting events is legal throughout most of the world. For some, the greatest joy comes from gambling on the uncertain outcomes of these contests. At the same time, all team sports have discovered the marketing advantages of adopting fantasy games, some of which approach sports gambling when a participant can chose a new team each week. No one has suggested that this fact of the sporting life be abolished, even if it were possible. Few turn on the games, especially football, without knowing the betting line. I would be surprised if the other commissioners follow Silver’s lead, but they will be asked. They have been steadfast in opposition to the spread of legalized sports betting, most recently with regard to New Jersey’s effort to resuscitate Atlantic City by following the Nevada “sports book” model. So far, the Rocky Mountain high has not caused Denver to rise about its mile limit. Only five states do not have a state lottery, but even some of those states have casino gambling.

Gambling on professional sports will go on whatever we do. What Silver has done is to present the issue for public discussion.

What then are the chances that the other sports leagues and the politicians will go along with Adam Silver’s proposal? In the short run, I would not bet on it. Once the states impose their regulations and their taxation on this activity, gambling on professional sports in America will be universal.

. It is a courageous position for a sports commissioner to take. We will see this trend continue.

There can be little question that sports gambling is a vice — much like drinking and playing the lottery. We are now experimenting with legalizing marijuana for recreational use. Of course, gambling depends upon the games remaining unfixed.

We now await input from the commissioners of the football, baseball and hockey leagues. Perhaps fair-minded individuals will see the proposal for what it is — an effort to respond to reality and minimize some of the unfortunate consequences of having to place bets with a bookie in violation of the law. To recognize the reality that hundreds of billions of dollars are bet annually — and illegally — on sports is an enormous breakthrough even if the NBA is the only sport to recognize the fact. Professional sports think that gambling means that their games will not be decided on the merits, that fixers will invade their enterprises and cause spectators and fans to lose interest in patronizing their entertainment businesses. It is time to legalize, regulate and tax it.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s op-ed in the New York Times calls upon Congress to change the nation’s laws to adopt a federal framework that allows states to authorize betting on professional sports. There is no reason to think that were Congress to give its consent in a fairly short period of time we would see a “sports book” in almost every jurisdiction. Alcohol continues to cause much more harm to society than illegal narcotics, but we learned the hard way that Prohibition generated far more problems than it solved. Were this to be enacted, state sports gambling would spread like the lottery. However, we have passed the point of trying to decide whether gambling on sports provides some sort of benefit to society.

How will politicians react to Silver’s proposal? If President Obama likes the idea — he dutifully fills out his bracket each March on the NCAA basketball tourney — then for sure the Republican majorities will oppose any change in the law Get More Info

Apart from these materials, basketballs for recreational games or children’s matches are made of materials as varied as plastic and foam. The basketball as we know it came about in 1934, with the official size 7, or 30″, being decided as the standard basketball size for men.

Basketballs have three parts, the outer shell, the inner core, and the innermost bladder.

It is important to remember that one brand cannot fulfill all the above criteria and one has to choose from the many varieties available in the market.

There are other factors to be kept in mind while selecting a basketball. Each type of basketball has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Size and weight are also important factors while choosing a basketball. Basketballs were first manufactured around 1894 by Albert G Spalding. The smaller women’s size was officially recognized much later. If used outdoors, they tend to crack easily. Composite leather basketballs, on the other hand, are good for both indoor and outdoors play. The bladder is generally made of butyl rubber. This is ensured by even pebbling and wide channels on the surface of the ball. Almost all basketball retailers offer the NBA prescribed size chart that you can consult before purchasing a basketball. If you choose expensive basketballs with snazzy designs, they may not be able to last the rigors of outdoor play. The core is made of rubber or sponge, or a mix of both. But for playing outdoors on rough surfaces, rubber basketballs are the best. The outer shell maybe made of leather, composite leather, synthetic leather, or rubber.

Also, the bounce of the basketball must be smooth. . The third most important factor is durability- does the basketball retain it’s bounce after regular use or goes flat after a few weeks play?

Then there is the question of price- it is important to remember that expensive brands may not always give value for money.

Leather basketballs are suitable only for indoor play. Does it afford a good grip? The Wilson Evolution series, for example, have a Dura fiber cover which helps the fingers grip the ball tightly Get More Info

He said gambling will always be driven by the customer.

“Because the guy that has no money in his pocket …

. is still going to call the local bookmaker to bet” because it requires no money, he said. “That ain’t what you do. No one’s ever gonna stop it.”

Ford asked Alite why he’s okay with letting New Jersey legalizing sports gambling.

“Because they won’t take it over,” he said. New Jersey is now appealing to the Supreme Court to legalize betting on games. “Gambling’s going on anyway. That ain’t your weed. All Rights Reserved. You’re not looking for John and Nancy Adams to walk in and order champagne cocktails and pomegranate martinis,” he said. The state hopes to collect millions.

However, as CBS News’ legal analyst Jack Ford reports on “60 Minutes Sports,” the ruling won’t put the mob out of business.

When Ford asked Luntz if legalizing sports betting would make bookmakers lose some of their business, he said “who cares.”

“You want the degenerate gamblers to bet with you. “They won’t even put a dent in it.”

Bookmakers and organized crime members have long profited in the high-stakes world of illegal sports gambling. That ain’t where you draw your money from.”

After two decades with the mob, John Alite told Ford he has given up bookmaking, and now supports efforts to legalize sports gambling.

“If that can help people in the community for their taxes, roads, the infrastructure of whatever goes on in Jersey, why not,” he said.

If it becomes legal, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has said there would be strict state oversight, much like the way it works at his state’s Atlantic City’s casinos.

But Angelo Lutz, who is a legitimate businessman and restaurateur, told Ford that if New Jersey wins, it still won’t have much of an impact on organized crime Get More Info

Toledo was dominated in a 2-41 home loss, getting out-gained by the Wildcats 185 yards at 3.7 yppl to 520 yards at 7.6 yppl, and I was actually pretty puzzled by the line on this game. That is unless you combine Jay Cutler with Mike Martz. This is the team they need to beat if they ever want to go to the playoffs. Coming into town this week is one of the nation’s best passing quarterbacks Christian Ponder, who averaged 7.3 yards per pass play last season despite facing teams that would allow just 5.4 yppp to an average quarterback.

PITTSBURGH (+2) over Atlanta

I went against Toledo last week with a Strong Opinion on Arizona and it is pretty clear to me that my negative assessment of the Rockets was correct. To see all his free analysis on every game this week, go to www.drbobsports.com]

Carolina (+6) over NEW YORK GIANTS

This Blogger’s Books and Other Items from…

I like getting points at Arrowhead against a SD team that starts slow and will have trouble at times on offense this season.

Detroit (+6.5) over CHICAGO

Turnover differential has a high correlation to winning and losing in football. Troy State has a poor defense that I rate at 0.7 yards per play worse than average, so Oklahoma State should be able to run up the points again this week.

Oklahoma State (-13.5) over Troy State

Most prognosticators have labeled Cal as being a couple of points worse this season than they were last year, but I graded the Bears as significantly better this season due to an expected resurgence on the defensive side of the ball. Giants are still beat up on the offensive line and may have trouble both running and protecting Eli.

Each week we are both going to pick five games against the spread.

The odds makers knew that Ben Roethlisberger would be out for this game when they posted the opening line of pick, but the public seems they think they know more than the professionals on how much losing Big Ben will mean to the Steelers.

Big time statement game for Houston. The Sooners were out played 5.4 yards per play to 5.6 yppl by a team that they were favored by 34 points against and that had better have been a case of looking ahead to this game or the Sooners are going to be in trouble. Toledo clearly isn’t as good as last year’s sub-par team and Ohio is better than they were a year ago.

Carolina was playing like an elite team at the end of last season and I think that momentum will carry into this season as they will be able to run the ball with their two stud running backs.

Cleveland was one of the hottest teams at the end of last season winning their last four and covering their last seven. Certainly a game that has been on the Texans mind all off-season. Not sure what TB has done to make them favored in this game. I’ll take the improving Lions getting points against a Bears team that will struggle this season.. At the end of the season one of us will owe the other dinner and hopefully, we will have provided some entertaining content for you. Most troubling is a secondary that allowed a previous below average passer (Utah State’s Diondre Borel) to slice them apart for 318 net passing yards at 8.0 yards per pass play. Bob versus Jeff Ma Challenge for this football season.

[Dr.

Cleveland (+3) over TAMPA BAY

HOUSTON (+2) over Indianapolis

CALIFORNIA (-9) over Colorado

So without further ado, here are this week’s picks.

Florida State (+7 ½) over OKLAHOMA

In my new book, The House Advantage, I profile one of the brightest minds in professional sports gambling, Dr. But the problem is turnovers are very difficult to predict. Bob’s Analysis is edited. If they can limit those, they will keep this game close. Like Schaub and the uncoverable Andre Johnson to put up some big points here and win this game in front of the home crowd.

Oklahoma State’s new offense (the “Air Raid” used at Texas Tech) was a huge success last week in their 65-17 win over Washington State, as the Cowboys racked up 310 yards at 7.6 yards per rushing play on the ground and 236 yards at 6.1 yppp. Last week that defense dominated UC Davis and held the Aggies to just 81 total yards at 1.8 yppl (UC Davis would average about 4.3 yppl on the road against an average Division 1A defense) and the Bears should have no trouble limiting a still bad Colorado offense that was 0.9 yppl worse than average last season.

KC (+4.5) over San Diego Chargers

Bob and I have been friends for the last few years but of course both have a competitive side to us. We’ll publish the picks each Friday on Huffington Post. KC had some competitive moments with SD last year but turned the ball over at crucial times. Prior to last season the Bears had been at least 0.6 yppl better than average defensively in 4 of the previous 5 seasons and head coach Jeff Tedford brought in aggressive defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast to take advantage of all of the speed and athleticism on that side of the ball. The Bears did lose a couple of All-Pac 10 defenders (and NFL draft picks) in DL Tyson Alualu and CB Syd’Quan Thompson, but Cal had an uncharacteristically bad season on defense in 2009 (5.6 yards per play allowed to teams that would combine to average 5.6 yppl against an average team) and the Bears have good talent on the line (NFL prospect Cameron Jordan), at the linebacker position (All Pac-10 Mike Mohamed), and in the defensive backfield (they have 6 solid players for 4 spots). Bob. Getting the better team with points. So sitting around having lunch last month we thought it would be fun to do Get More Info

In fact, more often than not, they can be a disaster. Now all of a sudden, they are winning 30 to 40 percent or higher. Many trainers nowadays give their horses as few as three gate works before entering them in race, and you will rarely see a workout longer than six furlongs on a first-time starter. Besides the fact that the tipsters have generally not considered the other horses in the race, the trainer usually will not have the horse ready to go the distance in an actual race. You can find out more on his website,www.bettingthehorsesonline.com

Many of the owners are biased in favor of their own horse to start with, followed by jockeys, trainers, jockey agents and exercise riders. Thus, they tell all their close friends, who in turn tell everyone else, until all the connected money shows up at the windows. These types of bets can make a horse a favorite in a short time. Despite the fact that these big late bets are often based on superior insider information and/or information products the general public does not have access too, it has been statistically proven that they predict success at about the same rate as the public. Owners take advice from trainers, who in turn are influenced by jockeys and exercise riders. They may know their horse is feeling good, but they fail to take into account the competition in the race. Many of owners think that because their exercise rider or jockey tells them that their horse worked exceptionally well, that the horse will win. These hot tips can come from anyone including trainers, jockeys, exercise riders, owners, grooms, clockers, and hotwalkers. . But why?

Mainly because the people who create the hot tips are concerned only with their own horse without consideration for the other horses in race. There are ther races!

The most profitable approach is not only to become a proficient handicapper, but also to become adept at creating your own odds line.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Richard Bleuze provides articles and information on the sport of horse betting.

Many horse bettors like to watch for the big money bets that occasionally flow into the mutuel pools just before post time. It is a money thing!

You will occasionally see certain trainers who have operated at a 10 percent win clip for their entire careers.

Another so called inside tip is when you are told to place a bet on a first time starter who has been working well. A hot tip from someone in the supposely know can spread like wild fire until it makes its way to the betting windows. If you think these proven losers have all of a sudden become master horsemen and exceptional horse trainers; you are mistaken. Owners are also influenced by trainers who are trying some new medication or equipment on a horse, but you are better off looking at the program yourself for equipment changes. These trainers get hot for a few seasons and disappear into oblivion.

Many horse bettors and racetrack workers will often assume that a hot tip from someone who works at the track (jockey, trainer, owner, etc) is a good thing. They are winning because of veterinarians and not because of their horse training! I suggest that you do not consider them a so called hot tip!

With three different and often misinformed groups influencing the odds at various stages of the process leading up to post time, it pays to do your homework and wait for the odds to work in your favor. These tips are not usually hot. If you have not yet placed a bet, I suggest th you simply skip the race. Last year was a good RLM season for NFL sports betting (45-29, 60.8 percent, +11.91), but two sportsbooks that were in the top five in NFL RLM in both seasons.

College Basketball sports betting was not too shabby either, with a two-year mark of 492-356-22, 58.0 percent, +91.96 units. We tracked the top five books for each of the pointspread sports for the last two years, as as you can see, this strategy has been profitable in every sport. To illustrate, let us say that San Diego Chargers open at -7 over the Miami Dolohins, and over 70 percent of the sports bets placed on the game are on San Diego. Keep an eyes on the top five sportsbooks at Sports Insights though, as NCAAF sports betting has been very liquid in that regard, with only one sportsbook (believe it or not, Bodog) finishing in the top five both years.

NBA sports betting has the lowest two-year five-book RLM winning percentage among the 11/10 sports, but then again, every gambler in the world would kill to go 382-301-9, 55.9 percent, +48.90 units, and the 57.5 percent win rate this past season is nothing to sneeze at. All of this will be fun to follow (not to mention profitable) when every sport except baseball are going on simultaneously during the winter months.

Thus, following reverse line movements is the same thing a following the smart money. Quite a few RLM followers watch the moves until almost game time, and then bet accordingly. Furthermore, they list the RLM records for many individual sportsbook, making it easy to spot which books this system is working at and which books it may be best to ignore.

Also, games where over 60 percent of the public are on one side, yet there is reverse line movement of at least 10 cents on the Money Line from the opening number at the top five sportsbooks in MLB and NHL sports betting has also been profitable. Keep in mind that NCAAB was the most liquid sport in terms of top-five sportbooks however, with not a single sportsbook making the top five both years. So what we recommend is to only use the top five each season for each individual sport (in terms of units won). Keep a close eye on Canbet here, as that Australian sportsbook cracked the top five both years.

The proper way to make a sports bet using reverse line movement is to place your bet as soon as there is an RLM of one full point (or 10 cents in MLB and NHL) off of the opening line. Sure, using this approach leaves open the possibility of the line turning around and moving back against you, but as you will see in bit, betting as soon as an RLM qualifies has been profitable in every major North American sport such as the last two seasons, so if one line turns around, so be it. This is where an important word of caution is in order though. The records quoted below are based on the bets being made at the triggering books, so beating the move by a half-point or a few cents now and then would actually make your record even better.

To back this up, our friends over at Prosportsonline.net have tracked the records for games where over 60 percent of the public has been on one side, yet there was reverse line movement of at least one full point from the opening number at the top sportsbooks in NFL, NCAAF, NBA and NCAAB. However, instead of the line rising as you might expect, it instead drops to Chargers -6. It should be noted that many fewer MLB games have qualified so far this season (is the whole world using RLM now?), but smaller profits is still profit.Again, these records are for Money Lines only and do not include totals. Finally, NHL sports betting has picked up 148.49 units in two years, and unlike MLB, NHL had four sportsbooks out of the top five gain double-digit units this past season. RLM takes place when more money/ sportsbook picks are bet by the small percentage of bettors that are on the unpopular side (the sharps) than is bet by the huge majority of players betting the popular side (the squares). Note that these records are for sides only and do not include totals.

The NFL sports betting is generally considered the toughest sport to beat, yet blindly following this method produced an exceptional 59.2 percent win rate last season, improving the two year record to 328-249-12, 56.8 percent, +59.06 units. Another important recommendation is to use a slow moving (but reliable) sportsbook. Carib ruled the roost season at 93-66-9, 58.5 percent, +18.55 units after ABC held the penthouse spot in the 2007-08 season.

The highest two-year winning percentage using RLM from the top five books belongs to College Football, which went 480-341-10, 58.5 percent, +95.10 units. This would make Miami +6 the RLM play.

So what causes RLM when the aim of most sportsbooks is to get as close to balanced action on both sides as possible? The answer to this is quite simple: the sharp bettors; the one’s who give sports betting advice.

By: Manny G. This may enable you to get the stale more favorable sports betting line at the time the reverse line movement hits at the triggering Sportsbook. The huge problem with this is that the nfl line, ncaaf line or nhl line may have moved too much by that time, and all of the value has been sucked out of the unpopular side.

Now do the sharps win every single time? Absolutely not! However, they are right more often than they are wrong, so being on the same side as the sharps is a prudent strategy over the long run, and again, the best thing is that there in absolutely no conventional sports handicapping necessary..
